As of May 25, 2022, Rhode Island became the 19th state to legalize the adult use of recreational marijuana. This means that Rhodians over the age of 21 can now possess up to one ounce of cannabis and cultivate up to three Rhode Island cannabis plants in their home. This follows The Ocean State being the 11th to legalize medicinal marijuana in 2006, currently allowing those over 18 with qualifying medical conditions to possess 2.5 ounces and up to 12 plants and 12 seedlings. Commercial cannabis delivery services are currently prohibited in Rhode Island, and while there are no licenses issued yet for a weed dispensary in Rhode Island for adult-use sales — with any luck, there will be as of December, making it a very green Christmas for those in L’il Rhody all thanks to Gov. Daniel McKee.
This newly signed Rhode Island Cannabis Act will also direct the Rhode Island Judiciary to automatically clear past convictions for cannabis, establish social assistance funds and services for communities disproportionately impacted by cannabis criminalization, and extend employment protections to employees who choose to use marijuana during non-working hours (meaning you can’t fail a drug test for weed). Pretty freakin’ wicked, am I right?
