Alaska Cannabis Laws

In many ways, when it comes to cannabis, Alaska has always been way ahead of its time. Afterall, way back in 1975, Alaska was the first state to legalize the possession of small amounts of cannabis. Yep, it’s true — in the case Ravin v. State, the Alaska Supreme Court ruled that a citizen’s right to privacy included keeping small amounts of cannabis in their home. So technically, this wasn’t legalization in the sense we’ve seen it unfold over the past decade, but it was the closest any state got to legalization before the medical and recreational legalization trend that kicked off in the late ’90s. By 1982, Alaska cannabis laws permitted residents to possess up to four ounces of cannabis at home and up to one ounce in public. This progress was short-lived, though. In 1990, Measure 2 passed, imposing penalties of up to 90 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000 for simple cannabis possession.

This wasn’t the end for changing Alaska cannabis laws. In 1998, Alaska became the second state to legalize medicinal marijuana. Then, in 2000 and 2004, new proposed Alaska recreational cannabis laws were on the ballot, only to fail both times. But then in 2014, this same proposal passed, making way for new Alaska recreational cannabis laws. Effective February 2015, this allowed adults aged 21 and older to possess up to one ounce of Alaska cannabis and cultivate up to six plants. It also allowed cannabis sales at state-licensed dispensaries, making Alaska the third state to legalize the recreational use and sale of marijuana, although the first dispensary didn’t actually open until the end of October in 2016.

So is weed legal in Alaska? Yes, it is. And not just for residents. Tourists from outside the state who are 21 or older may purchase and consume recreational cannabis. But here’s where it can get tricky — while private consumption is completely legal, Alaska cannabis laws do not allow for public usage. While Alaska did become the first state to license on-site cannabis consumption in 2019, Good Titrations in Fairbanks is currently the only cannabis retailer where you can enjoy weed in public. Other stores have received state approval, but are not currently open for business.

It is currently illegal to consume cannabis on streets or sidewalks, in public parks, and on federal land. Caution must be exercised when consuming in hotel rooms or privately-owned businesses that are open to the public. All of this makes the issue of Alaska cannabis storage more important than ever. You need to store all of that beautiful Alaska weed in a way that keeps it safe, keeps it protected from the elements and makes it easy to transport it discreetly. Luckily for those in the Land of the Midnight Sun, there are FreshStor products available to provide the ultimate cannabis storage solutions.

CVault®:

Cannabis Storage in Alaska

When it comes to the Alaska recreational cannabis industry, you’ll find the same high-quality products that you’d find in the bigger markets, but the higher costs of energy, cultivation and labor are reflected at the point of sale — making it all just a bit more pricey than you’d find in places like Los Angeles or Seattle. And Alaska definitely has its share of inclement weather. This can not only take a toll on the residents, but also the bud. If you are going to spend your hard-earned cash on Alaskan cannabis products, then you are going to need to keep it fresh and potent for as long as possible. This means it needs to be protected from potentially damaging natural elements like moisture, air and light.

Those plastic containers that your cannabis came in when you bought it at the dispensary simply do not offer the protection you need. Transferring it all into a mason jar won’t cut it either — they can break and they are not air tight unless sealed properly. To keep your cannabis at peak quality and maintain both potency and flavor, you need the protection that only a CVault can provide.

CVaults are manufactured from 304 grade stainless steel with a thick silicone ring that ensures a reliable seal, reinforced by secure latches to lock in product freshness. In sizes that hold anywhere from a quarter-ounce to more than two pounds, there is a CVault perfect for every person and every need.

With the Boveda humidity packs included with every purchase, your CVault is perfectly designed to not only maintain the integrity of whatever you put inside it, but it can actually enhance and improve its aroma and taste as well. CVaults are made to stand the test of time, improving product shelf life and protecting your investment in some delicious Alaska cannabis. It takes no more effort than a few clicks to have one or more CVaults delivered right to your door.
